How to change the volume of a recording
The tool does two things. It either changes the volume by a fixed number of decibels, or levels the recording to the loudness recommended by the EBU R128 standard, which is what streaming services use.
Levelling is usually what you want across a set of recordings from different sources: an interview from a phone and music from a studio then play at the same loudness and the listener never reaches for the volume control.
- Six decibels is roughly twice the perceived loudness.
- Too much gain starts to clip the sound, which you hear as crackling.
- On a quiet recording, levelling beats manual gain: it finds the right amount itself.
Frequently asked questions
What is the recommended loudness?
The target is −16 LUFS, the usual value for podcasts and music on the internet. Peaks are held below −1.5 dB so nothing clips.
Why is my recording distorted after boosting it?
Gain adds nothing that is not already in the recording. If the signal was too quiet, the noise gets louder along with it. Levelling helps more than a big plus in decibels.
Can it turn the volume down?
