How to resize an image
Resizing changes the number of pixels, unlike compression, which only changes how much detail is kept. Smaller dimensions mean a smaller file and faster loading, and above all an image that does not sprawl across the site you are posting it to.
The tool offers three ways to do it:
- Ready-made sizes: pick where the image is going (eBay, Etsy, Facebook Marketplace, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube) and the dimensions set themselves.
- Custom pixels: type a width and a height. With the aspect ratio locked, the second value is worked out for you and the photo is not distorted.
- Percentages: down to half, a quarter and so on.
For profile pictures and thumbnails, where the aspect ratio is fixed, we crop to the centre. For listings we only scale down, so nothing gets cut off. Enlarging small photos makes no sense, nobody can invent the missing pixels, so the tool never goes above the original size.
Frequently asked questions
What size should a photo be for a marketplace listing?
1200 px on the longer side is plenty. Marketplaces resize larger photos anyway, so uploading 6000 px only slows you down.
Does scaling down hurt quality?
Scaling down often improves it: detail is averaged out and noise disappears. Only enlarging is a problem.
Why was my image cropped?
Because the preset you chose has a fixed aspect ratio (Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube). To keep the whole photo, use custom pixels.
Do I get a PNG back?
The output is JPG. If you need PNG or WebP, run the file through the image format converter.
