More about Word counter

How the word counter works

Paste your text into the box above and the numbers update instantly. Nothing is sent to a server, the whole calculation happens right in your browser.

  • Words: runs of text separated by a space, a tab or a line break.
  • Characters: every character, spaces and line breaks included.
  • Characters without spaces: the usual unit for quoting translation or proofreading work.
  • Sentences: runs ending in a full stop, a question mark or an exclamation mark.
  • Paragraphs: blocks separated by a blank line.
  • Reading time: an estimate at 200 words per minute.
  • Keyword density: the ten most frequent words with their counts and share of the text. Conjunctions, prepositions and pronouns are left out, otherwise “the” and “and” would top every list.

What people use it for

Most often for coursework with a word limit, social media posts, meta descriptions for a website, and for estimating the size of a job for a copywriter or a translator.

Frequently asked questions

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. The tool runs entirely in your browser, the text is never uploaded and never stored.

Are accented characters counted correctly?

Yes. Letters with accents count as one character, exactly as in Word or Google Docs.

How are numbers and abbreviations counted?

A number surrounded by spaces is one word. An abbreviation ending in a full stop, like “e.g.”, can push the sentence count up, so in text full of abbreviations treat that number as a rough guide.

What keyword density is right for SEO?

The main keyword usually sits between 1 and 3%. A higher share reads as over-optimised and both readers and search engines notice. Density is a hint, not a target: write for people first.
