How to convert a video to another format
Drop the file in, choose the target format and start the conversion. The picture is re-encoded, so the result plays on devices that cannot handle the original format. For video from an iPhone (MOV) or a game recording (MKV), MP4 is the safe bet.
The conversion runs through ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly, which means it happens in your browser. The file is never uploaded, and for family videos or work recordings that matters more than speed.

Frequently asked questions
Does the quality suffer?
The video is re-encoded, so a little. The highest quality setting keeps the difference below what you can see, at the cost of a larger file.
Why does the conversion take so long?
Encoding is heavy work and in the browser it runs on a single thread. A minute of full-resolution video takes roughly a minute; scaling down to 720p speeds it up considerably.
Is the sound kept?
Yes, the audio track is converted along with the picture. If you want the video without sound, use the tool that removes audio.
Why is there no WebM output?
The computing core that runs in the browser can read WebM but not encode it. Offering an option that always ends in an error makes no sense. For the web, MP4 is just as usable and plays on more devices anyway.
How large a file can I upload?
Up to 200 MB. For longer recordings it is better to shrink the video first with the compression tool.
