How to convert a video to another format

Frequently asked questions
Does the quality suffer?
The video is re-encoded, so a little. The highest quality setting keeps the difference below what you can see, at the cost of a larger file.
Why does the conversion take so long?
Encoding is heavy work and in the browser it runs on a single thread. A minute of full-resolution video takes roughly a minute; scaling down to 720p speeds it up considerably.
Is the sound kept?
Yes, the audio track is converted along with the picture. If you want the video without sound, use the tool that removes audio.
Why does WebM use VP8 rather than VP9?
VP9 makes smaller files, but encoding it in the browser on a single thread is so slow that a one-minute video would take over an hour. VP8 runs as fast as H.264 and every browser plays it.
Which format for an old TV or DVD player?
Try AVI or MPG. AVI carries H.264 with MP3 audio, MPG is MPEG-2, which even players from before 2010 understand.
How large a file can I upload?
Up to 200 MB. For longer recordings it is better to shrink the video first with the compression tool.
