More about Character counter
When counting characters matters
Meta descriptions, social posts, form fields and text messages all come with a hard ceiling, and going one character over usually means the end of the sentence disappears. Paste the text here and the counts update as you type.
Characters with spaces, or without?
Both, side by side. Character limits on the web almost always include spaces, while translation and proofreading are usually quoted per character without them. Having the two numbers next to each other saves the guesswork.
Frequently asked questions
Do spaces and line breaks count as characters?
In the “characters” figure, yes: it counts everything, spaces and line breaks included, exactly as a form field would. The second figure leaves spaces out.
What is the difference between a character and a letter?
A character is anything at all, digits and punctuation included. Letters are only the letters, which is the number that matters when you are checking how much of the text is actual words.
Does it handle accented characters?
Yes. Letters with accents count as one character each, the same as in Word or Google Docs. Emoji made of several code points are counted the way the browser sees them.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Everything is counted in your browser and nothing is stored, so even a draft contract is safe to paste in.
