How to turn a video into a GIF
Drop a video in, set where the clip starts and how long it runs, then choose the smoothness and the width. The tool computes a palette from your clip and only then renders the GIF, so the colours match the original instead of turning to grey mush.
A GIF holds only 256 colours and carries no sound. A short, narrower clip is therefore better than the whole video: five seconds at 480 px wide comes to a few megabytes, half a minute at full width to tens of them.

Frequently asked questions
Why is the GIF bigger than the original video?
A GIF does not compress between frames, it stores nearly all of each one. That is why even a short animation ends up larger than the video. A smaller width and fewer frames per second both help.
Will the GIF have sound?
No, the GIF format cannot carry audio. For short videos with sound, MP4 is better.
Can I make a GIF from the whole video?
Leave the length field empty and it runs to the end of the video. With longer recordings, expect a large file and a long computation.
