How joining videos works

Drop in two to ten videos, order them with the arrows into the sequence you want, and start the join. All of it runs in your browser; the files are never uploaded. The first run downloads about 32 MB of the computing core, after that everything runs without waiting.

Fast joining and re-encoding

When every video shares the same codec and resolution — typically when they all came off one phone — they are joined without re-encoding. The data is simply repackaged into a new file, which takes seconds and leaves the picture exactly as it was.

As soon as the files differ, re-encoding is needed. Each video is first brought to a common canvas and frame rate and only then joined, because otherwise the join would be refused. It takes longer and the picture is compressed again, but you can join anything to anything.

The tool tries the fast route by itself and switches to re-encoding when that does not work. The result tells you which route it took.

Different resolutions and vertical video

When re-encoding, every video is fitted into a canvas based on the first file with its aspect ratio kept, and the rest is filled with black. So if you join a landscape video with a vertical one from a phone, the vertical one gets black bars at the sides. For the opposite, put the vertical one first, or crop the videos beforehand.

Videos without sound

Screen recordings and drone footage often have no audio track. The tool generates silence of the matching length for them, so the sound of the other shots does not shift. You can also drop the sound entirely and get a silent video.

Frequently asked questions

How many videos can I join at once?

Up to ten, each at most 200 MB. The browser's memory is the limit, not the tool: with longer footage it is safer to join in smaller groups and then join the results.

Does the quality suffer?

Not at all on a fast join, because nothing is recomputed. When re-encoding, the picture is compressed again, though on ordinary video the difference is hard to see.

Why does it take so long?

Re-encoding is heavy work and runs on a single thread in the browser, so that the tool works everywhere. With longer videos, expect minutes. Scaling to 720p speeds it up noticeably.

Can I join a video with music?

What if I need transitions between shots?

This tool lays the clips hard against each other. Crossfades, titles and parallel tracks are the video editor's job.
