How to convert a PDF to Word
PDF is a format for showing a document, not for editing it: it keeps no real information about paragraphs, styles or tables the way Word understands them. Conversion is therefore always a reconstruction: the tool reads where each piece of text sits on the page and builds a DOCX out of that.
What that means in practice:
- Plain text and paragraphs come out well and edit without any trouble.
- Tables, multiple columns and graphics shift around and need tidying up by hand.
- Scanned PDFs with no text layer cannot be converted: there is no text in the file, only a picture of the page.
The conversion is done by LibreOffice on our server. The document is deleted immediately after processing. 5 conversions a day for free, 100 with Premium.
Frequently asked questions
Will the result look exactly like the PDF?
With text documents, usually yes. With heavily designed layouts expect some tidying: no converter handles that perfectly, paid ones included.
What about a scanned document?
You need OCR, that is text recognition from an image. Try our image OCR tool and paste the recognised text into Word.
Are images kept?
Yes, images carry over into the document, though their position may shift.
Can I edit a contract this way?
Technically yes. Legally the signed version is the one that counts, so after any edit the document has to be agreed again by both sides.
