Aspect ratios and circular crops

A circular crop makes a round image with transparency around it, ideal as an avatar. Square and ratio crops are saved as JPG, circular ones as PNG so the background stays transparent. Frequently asked questions
Does the photo keep its quality?
Yes. The crop works on the full resolution of the original and simply takes the selected part out of it. Nothing is scaled down.
Why is the circular crop a PNG?
A circle needs transparent corners, and PNG can store that. JPG knows nothing about transparency and would fill the corners with white or black.
Do you upload the photo to a server?
No. The whole crop happens in your browser, the photo never leaves your device.
